Details

GitLab, developer of the namesake DevOps tool, GitLab, announced an update, GitLab 14.2. Like every update, GitLab 14.2 comes with innovation, improved compatibility, etc. Still, GitLab 14.2 is setting the tone for new strides in DevOps practices with tons of improvements. The preview capability and code duplicate reduction pegged the most noteworthy of all upgrades. For software that gets its slice of updates every month, that is a lot.

Coupled with other functions, the new update is intended to reduce code duplication by licensing them to access variables in their gitlab-ci.yml files. Being the first GitLab release to portray the definition of a needs connection between all projects in the continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines; users can easily overlook the stage's definition, leaving the software to determine the tasks that need fulfillment before a project is given the green light.

Talking of other functions, one of them is Gitpod, a tool used to incorporate Integrated Development Environments in the cloud. Integrated with GitLab, groups can now track fuzz testing and dependency scanning without the need for an application programming interface (API).

After prior contemplations and user review demands, GitLab is finally adding a beta version of Build Cloud for macOS for its software as a service (SaaS) edition. Senior product marketing manager for GitLab, Parker Ennis, highlighted this to be a result of an increase in the adoption of the software as a Service edition of GitLab due to stay-at-home policies all over the globe with developers not left out.

Most DevOps teams focus on trying to improve the productivity of developers; they are not expected to return to the office any time soon as new variants of the COVID-19 virus continue to emerge.

Here's one for teams that have ever been about using the development tier in their pipeline gain to allow them access to pipeline events webhook; it's available in this release. It may also display a pipeline's internal ID rather than the standard one for more clarity. It has learned to deploy tokens for authentication when using the GitLab Dependency Proxy. Another one for other functions is the Usage Quotas Page, which monthly logs CI minutes for each project.

The real-time Markdown preview capability found in GitLab's integrated Web IDE with the Control-Shift-P shortcut is a very noteworthy feature. It allows developers to get a live preview of Markdown files used to produce rich web content.
